Low birth weight: a singleton baby born after at least 37 weeks of pregnancy (full term) that weighs less than 5 pounds, 8 ounces. This is sometimes called "intrauterine growth retardation."
Very low birth weight: a singleton baby born weighing less than 3 pounds, 5 ounces, regardless of the length of pregnancy.
Premature births: singleton births before 37 weeks gestation.
Very premature births: singleton births before 32 weeks gestational age (length of pregnancy).
