Unintentional, non-occupational pesticide poisoning ED visits in Minnesota:
The rate of ED visits for pesticide poisoning has remained fairly consistent over the years, around one case of pesticide poisoning ED vists per 100,000 people. ED visits for pesticide poisoning was highest in 2002 and lowest in 2016. The ED visits are more common than hospitalizations for pesticide poisonings.
Children age 4 and under have a higher rate of ED visits for pesticide poisonings than other age groups. ED visit rates are not significantly different by sex.
Young children are especially vulnerable to pesticide poisoning. Special care should be taken to prevent them from being exposed to pesticides.
ED visits for pesticide poisoning follow a seasonal pattern. They increase in the summer and fall, probably due to the increased use of pesticides for pest management.
The Southwest region has the highest rate of ED visits for pesticide poisonings; the Central and Metro regions have the lowest rates.
These regional rates are adjusted for population size and age.
